23-point streak rescues Valley View

Ella Cooper hit four 3-pointers in the game and host Valley View put together a 23-point, second-half streak to overcome a deficit and a big night from Berwick’s Rachel Whitenight on the way to a 56-43 victory in a District 2 Class 4A girls basketball quarterfinal.

Berwick outscored Valley View, 16-7, to begin the second half and take a 35-28 lead.

The Cougars responded with the last nine points of the third quarter and the first 14 of the fourth for the game-changing, 23-0 run.

Cooper finished with 17 points, including 9 in the fourth quarter when she hit her last two 3-pointers.

Giada Costa was 4-for-4 from the line in the fourth and finished with nine points.

Freshman Ava Gazoo, who had six of her points in the fourth quarter, and Maura Barrett added eight points each.

Whitenight scored 10 points in the first quarter to get Berwick out to a 15-14 lead.

The Lady Bulldogs trailed 21-19 at halftime, but Whitenight hit two 3-pointers as they surged into the lead.

Whitenight scored her team’s only eight fourth-quarter points.

Valley View (12-11) advances to play at second-seeded Wyoming Area (13-9) Friday night. The Lady Warriors had a quarterfinal bye.

Berwick finishes 4-19.
