Prep swimmers sweep Del Valley, finish unbeaten in Lackawanna

Liv Turner Havira, Nicole Izira, Nathan Thayer, Ethan Haggerty and Alex Iannone all won four events Thursday night as Scranton Prep defeated visiting Delaware Valley in girls and boys meets to claim Lackawanna League swimming championships.

All four teams were unbeaten going into the final meet of the regular season, which was held at the University of Scranton.

Turner Havira and Iriza led the host Classics to a 110-60 victory in the girls meet.

Thayer, Haggerty and Iannone matched their effort by winning two individual and two relay events while leading the Cavaliers to a 92-77 victory in the boys meet.

Mackenzie Cross, Carmine Jervis, Ava Forgione and Tessa Mangan combined to win the 200-yard medley relay by 3.7 seconds in 1:55.09 to start off the meet for the Scranton Prep girls.

Turner Havira got her successful night started in the first individual event, winning the 200 freestyle in 2:03.97. She added a win in the 100 butterfly, then was part of wins in both freestyle relays late in the meet.

Cross, who was later a part of a second relay win, followed Turner Havila’s first victory with a win in the 200 individual medley.

Iriza won the 50 and 100 freestyles and swam those same distances as part of relay wins.

Delaware Valley’s Alexis Ristaino had the team’s only event win in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:11.25.

Ava Newman won the 500 freestyle for Scranton Prep.

Jervis, Forgione and Mangan were also part of two relay wins.

Scranton Prep finished 9-0 while Delaware Valley was 8-1.

The Scranton Prep boys finished 8-0 while Delaware Valley went 7-1.

Scranton Prep also won all but one boys event, but Delaware Valley made the meet closer by taking more of the second- and third-place points.

Thayer won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly; Haggerty won the 200 free and 500 free; and Iannone won the 100 free and 100 back along with their relay victories.

Liam Ong won the 200 individual medley and was on both winning freestyle relay teams.

Keith Sublett had Delaware Valley’s win in the 100 breaststroke.

Gordon Kopa and Ben Galko were the other relay swimmers to win twice each for the Cavaliers.

Both teams continue their seasons in the District 2 championships March 4-5 at Wilkes-Barre Area. Scranton Prep competes in Class 2A and Delaware Valley in Class 3A.
