Miranda Karoscik shot a 1-under-par, 33 as Scranton Prep opened its girls golf season Wednesday by beating four teams in a multi-way match at Sleepy Hollow Golf Course.
Karoscik led the way as Scranton Prep, which finished fifth in the state in Class 3A last season, had the best three scores and tied for the fourth-best score among five-plus teams.
Scranton Prep’s 149, three-player score beat Riverside’s 190, Holy Cross’ 204, Old Forge’s 230 and Blue Ridge’s 245.
Riverside went 3-1 on the day while Holy Cross was 2-2, Old Forge 1-3 and Blue Ridge 0-4.
Gianna Cafarella shot 35 and Ana Galko 40 to complete the Scranton Prep team score.
Chloe Lynch from Scranton Prep shot 41 to match Brooke Ann Pawleski from Holy Cross and Lily Sedlak from Mountain View, which did not have enough players for a team score.
BOYS
Wyoming Area edged Dallas in a Class 3A Division match, which was the second Wyoming Valley Conference match in the first week of the season to be decided on a fifth-score tiebreaker.
The WVC decides matches on medal play, using the top four of six scores.
Wyoming Area and Dallas each had a four-player score of 185.
Ryan Bonin and Mario Belza each shot 51 to edge the fifth Dallas player by one stroke to give Wyoming Area a 236-237 edge.
Jack Mulhern led Wyoming Area with an 8-over-par, 44 at Irem Temple Country Club.
Brady Noone shot 45, Matt Rusinchak 47 and Dane Schutter 49 for Wyoming Area.
Charlie Letwinsky from Dallas was medalist with a 43.
Ryan Vallach shot 45 and Rhys Bonvie 47 for the Mountaineers. Isabella Wickenheiser added a 50.
In other WVC Class 3A Division matches, Hazleton Area defeated Wilkes-Barre Area, 165-177, and Pittston Area downed Wyoming Valley West, 164-189.
Connor Matteo from Hazleton Area and both Jordan Wychock and Brady Gerrity from Wilkes-Barre Area shot 39s at Wilkes-Barre Golf Club.
Gabe Fatula, Jake Babinchak and Koen Gaydos each shot 42s for the Cougars.
Mike Hamel had a 42 or the Wolfpack.
Berwick downed MMI Prep, 177-202, in a WVC Class 2A Division match.
Scranton and Wallenpaupack won Lackawanna League Class 3A Division matches.
Matt Barrett shot 40 while winning in both singles and better-ball for Scranton in the first foursome during an 8-1 victory over West Scranton.
Wallenpaupack posted a 9-0 shutout of Delaware Valley in its league opener.
