Southern Columbia erased a 14-point halftime deficit by scoring 6 touchdowns in less than 15 minutes Friday night while beating host Berwick, 42-27, in a non-league game between teams that have combined for 18 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state football titles.
Berwick at one time held the state record of six state championships, but Southern Columbia has soared past that with a dozen championships, including each of the past five years.
The head coaching debut of Mike Bennett at his alma mater got off to a great start with Berwick taking a 14-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The teams then waited nearly two hours before starting the second half because of a lightning delay.
Southern Columbia was ready for the restart.
The Tigers scored on their first five possessions of the second half, offsetting Matt Lonczynski’s second and third touchdown passes of the night – a 40-yarder to Drey Wilk in the third quarter and an 80-yarder to Spencer Kishbaugh in the fourth.
Wilk caught two touchdown passes for the Bulldogs.
