Blue Ridge’s Libby Zick served a perfect set Thursday, Sept. 15 when the unbeaten Lady Raiders defeated Elk Lake, 25-5, 25-0, 25-13, in a Lackawanna League girls volleyball match.
Zick started serving in the second set and never let Elk Lake get the serve back.
While Zick had 19 aces in the match and 8 during the set, it was up to her teammates to make sure the other points were finished off once she placed the ball in play.
Zick finished with 42 service points in the match. She also had 17 assists.
Foxlynn King had eight kills and Brooke Tingley added six for the Lady Raiders, who put all but three of their serves in play.
While Blue Ridge remained unbeaten by dominating from the start, Abington Heights posted its first win with a recovery from dropping the first two sets.
Olivia Jackson had nine aces and seven kills as Abington Heights rallied past Lackawanna Trail, 17-25, 14-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-7.
Sadie O’Brien had 9 kills.
Madison Smith had 25 digs and Kate Lloyd added 24.
Katherine Hastie had 18 assists.
Dunmore defeated Montrose; Western Wayne topped Mountain View and North Pocono beat Susquehanna, in other Lackawanna matches, all of which ended in sweeps.
Leah Weinreb had 22 service points, with the help of 13 aces, as Delaware Valley swept Hanover Area, 25-6, 25-7, 25-11, in the Wyoming Valley Conference.
Emily Henn had a match-high 10 kills.
Lake-Lehman needed five sets to get past rival Dallas.
Berwick swept Wyoming Area while Tunkhannock beat Wilkes-Barre Area in five sets in other WVC matches.
FIELD HOCKEY
Alexys Moore assisted the first goal and scored the second when visiting Wyoming Area defeated Crestwood, 2-1, in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 game between teams that played in the 2021 Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament.
Wyoming Area and Crestwood, the defending District 2 Class 2A champion, are regarded as the top threats to five-time defending champion Wyoming Seminary.
The Lady Warriors took a 2-0 lead into the fourth quarter.
Bianca Pizano scored the first goal and Lyla Rehill assisted on the second.
Wyoming outshot Crestwood, 16-5, and had a 19-5 advantage in penalty corners. The Lady Warriors improved to 2-0 in the division and 5-0 overall with a combined victory margin of 29-2.
Abington Heights downed Pittston Area, 2-1, in a game between two of the last three unbeatens in WVC Division 2.
Madison Zalewski assisted goals by Caroline Pease and Marygrace Sabatini in the last 4:16 of the first half.
Pittston Area’s Bella Giardina scored on an assist by Morgan Hilbert in the third quarter.
The teams were even in shots on goal and Pittston Area had an 8-6 lead in penalty corners.
Emma Newman made seven saves while Emily Bartell had a defensive save for first-place Abington Heights (4-0, 5-2).
Nanticoke remained within a half-game of the lead by shutting out Tunkhannock, 3-0.
The other two Division 2 games ended in 1-0 shutouts with Hanover Area beating Berwick and Holy Redeemer beating Wallenpaupack.
BOYS SOCCER
Kohen Stiles scored both goals as unbeaten Abington Heights defeated visiting Delaware Valley, 2-0, in a Lackawanna League Division 1 meeting of ranked teams.
The Comets improved to 4-0 and 5-0.
The other three Lackawanna Division 1 games were all one-goal games.
North Pocono edged Honesdale, 3-2, while Scranton Prep beat Scranton and Valley View defeated Wallenpaupack in 2-1 games.
Drew Smith scored two goals while Ron Prislupski had a goal and two assists as Holy Cross shut out Lakeland, 4-0, in a Lackawanna Division 2 game.
Western Wayne defeated Mountain View, 3-1, in another Lackawanna Division 2 game.
Old Forge shut out Elk Lake, 2-0; Riverside blanked Forest City, 5-0; and Gregory the Great Academy routed West Scranton, 10-1, in Lackawanna Division 3 games.
Tunkhannock edged Crestwood and Wyoming Area defeated Hazleton in a pair of 3-2 Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 games.
Berwick defeated MMI Prep, 4-1, in WVC Division 2.
GIRLS SOCCER
Hailey Kline scored the winning goal with less than eight minutes remaining as defending champion Lake-Lehman handed Wyoming Area its first Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 loss, 2-1.
Holy Redeemer routed Tunkhannock, 7-1, in the other WVC Division 2 game.
Wyoming Valley West defeated Pittston Area, 5-1, in WVC Division 1 while Mid Valley routed Holy Cross, 12-0, in Lackawanna League Division 3.
GIRLS TENNIS
Julia Glowacki and Olivia Jardine won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 doubles in Crestwood’s 5-0 Wyoming Valley Conference victory over Pittston Area.
The Lady Patriots made things more difficult in singles, pushing one match to three sets and another to a first-set tiebreaker.
In other WVC matches, unbeaten Wyoming Seminary blanked Wilkes-Barre Area, 5-0, and Wyoming Valley West edged Hanover Area, 3-2.
Rina Hanumali won, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2 singles for unbeaten Abington Heights in its 5-0 victory over North Pocono in the Lackawanna League.
In other Lackawanna matches: Delaware Valley defeated Holy Cross, 4-1; Mid Valley downed Dunmore, 4-1; Montrose edged Honesdale, 3-2; Valley View beat Riverside, 4-1; and Scranton Prep shut out Scranton, 5-0.
