Berwick grabs No. 1 position

Berwick defeated the teams immediately ahead of and behind it in the past week, winning a pair of battles of Wyoming Valley Conference unbeatens, to ascend to the top of the Electric City Volleyball Academy Elite Eight Power Rankings of District 2 girls teams.

The Lady Bulldogs replace Delaware Valley, the team that had been on top all season, as the new No. 1 in the rankings, which were released early Friday morning.

Berwick and Delaware Valley were both unbeaten overall when the Lady Bulldogs went on the road and came away with a five-set victory Sept. 23.

Before the week was over, Berwick and Delaware Valley each beat the other two teams that had been unbeaten in the WVC.

North Pocono also moved up in this week’s rankings.

Holy Redeemer remained in third despite its first WVC loss, Tuesday against Berwick.

Blue Ridge improved District 2’s best overall record to 13-0 by beating four opponents to extend its streak of three-set sweeps to nine. The Lackawanna League Division 1-leading Raiders remain in fourth.

North Pocono won twice and now has seven straight sweeps to reach fifth, its highest ranking of the season.

The Lady Trojans traded places with Lake-Lehman, which dropped to sixth after a non-league loss to Blue Ridge and its first WVC loss of the season Thursday night against Delaware Valley.

Dallas, which won both its matches, and Pittston Area remained in seventh and eighth.
