Wyoming Area girls climb to No. 1

One week after Abington Heights rose to the top of the Big School girls rankings, there is a new Small School No. 1 in the Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Wyoming Area outscored two Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 opponents, 24-1, to take over the top Small School girls spot when the rankings were released Thursday morning.

The Crestwood girls also moved up this week, along with the North Pocono, Hazleton Area, Wilkes-Barre Area and Dunmore boys. The Delaware Valley boys and Wyoming Valley West girls joined the rankings.

Abington Heights continues to lead both Big School rankings while Holy Cross remained No. 1 in Small School boys.

The top three WVC Division 2 girls teams continue to jockey for position, both in their division standings and in the Super Six.

Holy Redeemer continues to sit on the top of those standings, but slipped below Wyoming Area into second after losing, 4-0, to Abington Heights in a non-league game.

Lake-Lehman, the team they are battling with, remained third after splitting its two games with a non-league loss.

Montrose, Lakeland and Honesdale held the fourth through sixth spots. Montrose won twice to extend its winning streak to five going into Thursday’s game at Lakeland.

While the top three in WVC Division 2 are prominent in the Small School rankings, the top three of Lackawanna Division 1 are a large part of the Big School girls rankings.

Abington Heights and Valley View held 1-2 while division rival Delaware Valley slipped from fourth to third when it was passed by Crestwood.

Abington Heights won three times, running its winning streak to nine by first pushing its shutout streak to seven before winning in overtime at Delaware Valley, 2-1.

WVC Division 1 leader Crestwood outscored two divisional opponents, 13-1, while making its upward move.

Wyoming Valley West won three times over teams in last week’s rankings, extending its winning streak to four and joining the rankings in fifth. Two of its wins were over Dallas, dropping the Lady Mountaineers from fifth to sixth.

Berwick fell from the rankings after losing two of its three games, including to Wyoming Valley West.

There was just one change in Small School boys.

Dunmore scored seven goals in each of its two wins and took over second from Holy Redeemer, which was upset by Hanover Area.

Unbeaten Holy Cross posted two shutouts to hold first.

Wyoming Seminary, Lake-Lehman and Lakeland remained in fourth through sixth.

Big School boys continued to be shuffled behind Abington Heights, the No. 1 team, which possesses the only perfect soccer record in District 2.

All the other Big School boys teams have at least three losses.

North Pocono and Hazleton Area both remained hot while moving up two spots into second and third.

The Trojans have won three straight overall and six straight within District 2. The Cougars avenged one of their three straight one-goal losses to start the season when they beat Dallas, 3-1, and added another victory to run their winning streak to five and take over the WVC Division 1 lead.

Wyoming Area held on to fourth despite a loss.

Wilkes-Barre Area moved up one spot to fifth.

Delaware Valley won three times, giving the Warriors a four-game winning streak and a return to the rankings in sixth.

Dallas fell from the rankings.
