WILKES-BARRE – Rina Hanumali and the doubles team of Hanna Adonizio and Faith Bennett each dominated in a pair of Tuesday victories as Abington Heights wrapped up a fifth straight District 2 Class 3A girls tennis team championship at Kirby Park.
Hanumali, at second singles, and Adonzio-Bennett, at first doubles, each dropped just one game in four sets as Abington Heights cruised through a 3-0 semifinal victory over West Scranton and a 3-0 championship match win over Wallenpaupack.
Sona Hanumali’s third singles win provided the other point in the championship match. The Comets had won the first set of the other two matches and took 50 of the 60 games that were completed before the match was halted with the outcome decided.
Bernie Mullin and Mary Booth provided the other point in the semifinal with a win at second doubles.
Third-seeded Wallenpaupack knocked off second-seeded Crestwood in the semifinals by sweeping singles with wins by Erika Badner, Frankie Toppi and Sarah Niemiec.
West Scranton No. 1 singles player Gabrielle Chantiloupe was the only player to win a set against Abington Heights Tuesday. She won the first set over Susan Arp in the semifinals, but was trailing in the second set when the match was stopped.
Abington Heights and Wallenpaupack had entered the tournament ranked 1-2 among Big Schools in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
