While they waited Friday night, the stakes were raised for Scranton Prep and Scranton heading into their separate Saturday afternoon games.
Scranton Prep moved into a three-way tie for first place in Lackawanna Football Conference Division 1 while Scranton caught up in the all-important loss column.
No longer in need of help elsewhere to have a chance to at least share in the division title, the Cavaliers a Knights are in position to improve their status today while waiting for what would then become bigger games ahead.
Delaware Valley defeated Valley View, 41-27, handing the Cougars their first loss in the division and pulling even with them at 3-1.
Scranton Prep, already at 3-1 in the division because it still has a divisional bye week ahead, can at least temporarily take over sole possession of first place when it hosts North Pocono at 1:30 this afternoon at Scranton Memorial Stadium. The Cavaliers are 5-2 overall. North Pocono is 1-3 and 3-4.
Scranton can join the teams at 3-1 and raise the importance of next week’s game against Delaware Valley. The Knights are coming off their first loss as they get set to play at Abington Heights (1-2, 1-6) today at 1.
Scranton Prep plays at Valley View in two weeks to wrap up the regular season. Last season, the two teams met in the last week with Scranton Prep winning to take the LFC Division 2 title. After moving up to join the five existing members of Division 1 in realignment, they could be playing for a share of or even an outright title in the finale again.
The other game on Saturday’s football schedule also has implications on a division lead.
Old Forge (2-0, 4-3) goes to Holy Cross (0-2, 0-7) for a 1 p.m. game to try to join Riverside in a tie for the LFC Division 3 lead heading into their showdown next week.
