Wallenpaupack’s Erika Badner-Frankie Toppi and Wyoming Seminary’s Victoria Martinez-Anastasia Martinez captured the District 2 girls tennis doubles titles Friday afternoon at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre by combining to win three matches against higher-seeded opposition.
Bander-Toppi won the title in Class 3A where they were seeded third.
The Martinez team won in Class 2A as the second seed.
Determining the Class 3A champion was a lengthy process as both semifinals went to a tiebreaker in the third set and the final was completed in two long sets during which Badner-Toppi knocked off top-seeded Rina Hanumali-Sona Hanumali from Abington Heights.
The score of the final was 6-4, 7-5.
Badner-Tappi won the championship after eliminating the second-seeded West Scranton team of Gabrielle Chantiloupe-Mia Butka, 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5), in the semifinals.
The Hanumalis had gotten past an upset bid by Crestwood’s Hannah Ziegler-Julia Glowacki, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5), in the semifinals.
The Martinez team defeated Scranton Prep’s Leelah Farrell-Emma Cuck, 6-0, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, in the final.
Farrell-Cuck, the top seed after playing second and third singles on Scranton Prep’s district team champs, handled the Dallas team of Dani Konnick-Sophia DePolo, 6-0, 6-2, in the semifinals.
The Martinez team beat consecutive opponents from Scranton Prep, starting with Annie Johnson-Giselle Falzone, 6-1, 7-5, in the semifinals.
