Sewickley Academy swept Scranton Prep’s previously unbeaten doubles teams Friday to knock the Classics out of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 2A girls tennis team tournament with a 3-2 victory in the state quarterfinal match at the Hershey Indoor Racquet Club.
The match featured two of the most successful programs in PIAA team tennis history. The teams have combined for more than 50 state tournament victories and 9 state championship matches, including the 6 state runner-up finishes by Scranton Prep.
Sewickley Academy was the 2011, 2018 and 2019 state champion. The District 7 runners-up also eliminated the Classics in the state quarterfinals in Hershey in 2014 and 2017.
Alyssa Wigley and Emma Cuck provided Scranton Prep with its team points at No. 1 and No. 3 singles.
Wigley downed Ashley Close, 6-3, 6-1. Cuck defeated Rayna Thakkar by identical tiebreaker scores, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3).
Sewickley Academy won the No. 2 singles match when Kristen Close defeated Leelah Farrell, 6-1, 6-0.
Maria Silvaggio-Maria Sirianni topped Ella Cohen-Grace Devine at second doubles, 6-3, 6-0.
The only three-set match was at No. 1 doubles where Anjali Shah-Gwyn Belt defeated Annie Johnson-Gisele Falzone, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.
Scranton Prep had been unbeaten while winning the Lackawanna League and District 2 Class 2A titles as well as a first-round state tournament match.
The Classics ended the season as the No. 1 Small School team in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Girls Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
