DIMOCK – Mia Snyder and Paley Adams led the way as Montrose’s defense dominated the early stages of the Jill Hoffman-Denise Reddon Memorial Tournament championship game Wednesday night.
The Lady Meteors held host Elk Lake scoreless into the final minute of the first quarter, scoring the game’s first 16 points on the way to a 50-24 romp.
Hayley Pompey and Aspen Smith scored 18 and 16 points and made the all-tournament team from Montrose. They each reached double figures by halftime as the Lady Meteors used control of other parts of the game to set themselves up to shoot better than 50 percent in the first half.
The Lady Meteors forced 14 turnovers and built a 22-8 rebound lead in the first half.
Those advantages were even bigger early.
Montrose grabbed 10 of the game’s 12 rebounds in the first 5½ minutes.
Adams blocked four shots in the first 6:12 and another in the second quarter.
Snyder had six steals in the first half.
Adams and Snyder also keyed the rebounding advantage with seven and five.
Pompey, Smith, Adams and Snyder each scored four points during Montrose’s 16-0 start.
The Lady Meteors led 18-2 at the quarter and extended that to 32-8 at halftime.
Smith, who also had the last basket of the first quarter, and Pompey had six points each in the second quarter, each making three straight shots at one point.
Pompey also had six points in the third quarter as Montrose pushed the lead to 42-11 before being outscored under the Mercy Rule running clock conditions of the fourth quarter.
Madisyn Casselbury led Elk Lake with six points.
Leah Traver and Sydney Upright represented the Lady Warriors on the all-tournament team.
Montrose won its fifth straight to improve to 5-2. Elk Lake dropped to 3-4.
Blue Ridge 43, Susquehanna 29
All-tournament selection Emma Button scored 14 points to lead Blue Ridge to the win in the third-place game.
Kaelynn Brant added nine points.
Leigha McCain hit a pair of 3-pointers and the Lady Raiders held the Lady Sabers to two points in the second quarter while stretching an 18-12 lead to 30-14 at the half.
Lexi Iveson, who also made the all-tournament team, had eight points for Susquehanna.
