Jack Russell hit five 3-pointers in the game and Montrose held Susquehanna to one field goal in the second quarter as the Meteors opened their Lackawanna League Division 4 boys basketball season by defeating the visiting Sabers, 50-39.
Russell, who finished with 23 points, made three shots from beyond the arc in the first quarter to help the Meteors take a 19-11 lead after one quarter.
Defense took it from there and Montrose, which had the division’s Opening Night bye, stretched its lead to 29-15 at halftime.
Colton Stone led Susquehanna with 19 points.

Blue Ridge shook off a second-quarter Mountain View comeback then ran away with the road victory.
The Eagles closed from 18 points 6 before the Raiders broke away again.
Connor Cranage led the way with 20 points and 12 rebounds.
Carson Gallagher added 17 points. Dylan Bradley grabbed 12 rebounds. J.J. Rosa dished out 10 assists.
The Raiders improved to 2-0 to share first place with Forest City.
