Lady Knights take over No. 1

Lake-Lehman found the most direct route to the top of the Super Six.

Starting from the No. 2 position, the Lady Knights defeated former No. 1 Dunmore and are once again the top Small School girls team in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The debate, however, is hardly over.

Dunmore started No. 1, lost the spot to Lake-Lehman briefly and took it back. The Lady Knights took it away again this week, but, playing with the home-court advantage, they needed overtime to defeat the Lady Bucks Saturday.

With Dunmore still slightly ahead of Lake-Lehman in the power ratings District 2 uses to determine its seeds, the teams are currently positioned 1-2 in Class 3A and on a path to possibly meet again on a neutral court with larger stakes on the line.

The newest Super Six was posted Sunday night.

The Valley View boys also regained a spot they formerly held while the Wilkes-Barre Area, Abington Heights, Hazleton Area and Western Wayne girls also moved up.

The Scranton Prep boys rejoined the rankings.

Abington Heights, in Big Schools, and Holy Redeemer, in Small Schools, remain as the top-ranked boys teams.

Scranton Prep held on to No 1 among Big School girls despite suffering its first in-state loss.

Valley View traded places with Dallas in Big School boys, taking over second when it won twice while the Mountaineers, like the Scranton Prep girls, were losing to a team from outside District 2.

Dallas lost at Muhlenberg, 67-64, in non-league play Saturday.

Pittston Area and Nanticoke held fourth and fifth. They joined Abington Heights and Valley View in having 2-0 weeks.

Scranton Prep lost to Abington Heights for the second time this season, but replaced Hazleton Area at No. 6. The Cougars have lost three of their last four.

The Small School boys rankings remained the same.

Holy Redeemer is followed by Holy Cross and Mid Valley after all three went 2-0 during the week.

No. 4 Riverside lost once and No. 5 Old Forge lost twice, but although they brought more teams into the debate, they stayed there while Forest City held on to sixth.

The Scranton Prep girls had a six-game winning streak broken when a double-figures lead got away in a 54-53 loss to District 1’s Villa Maria Academy.

Pittston Area held on to second.

Wyoming Valley West, which a week earlier had handed Pittston Area its first loss, lost three straight to drop from third to sixth.

Wilkes-Barre Area, Abington Heights and Hazleton Area gained one spot each into third, fourth and fifth. The No. 3 Wolfpack has won five straight. Abington Heights and Hazleton Area lost close games to Scranton Prep and Pittston Area.

Lake-Lehman won, 51-40, over Dunmore in a meeting of teams that came in with eight-game winning streaks. The Lady Knights also beat No. 3 Holy Redeemer during a 3-0 week to add to the case they made for being the new No. 1.

Holy Redeemer and Montrose remained in third and fourth.

Western Wayne moved from No. 6 to No. 5, bumping Mid Valley down one spot.
