GIRLS ROUNDUP: Dallas joins Berwick, Crestwood as winners

Molly Walsh scored 19 points to lead a three-pronged attack that carried Dallas to a 63-41 victory over visiting Hazleton Area in a Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 girls basketball regular-season finale Wednesday night.

Victoria Spaciano scored 18 points and Elizabeth Viglone added 15 as Dallas continued a late-season surge. The fifth-place Lady Mountaineers won six of their last seven to improve to 7-7 in the division and 12-10 overall while completing a home-and-home sweep of the second-place Lady Cougars.

Hazleton Area (9-5, 16-6) still landed Division 1’s second berth in next week’s WVC Tournament on a tiebreaker over Wyoming Valley West.

Viglone was 8-for-8 and Walsh was 9-for-10 as Dallas went 22-for-25 from the line.

Dallas outscored Hazleton Area by 30 points after Sophia Shults scored 6 of her game-high 15 points in the first quarter to get the Lady Cougars out to a 21-13 lead.

Viglone had seven points and Walsh six in the first quarter.

Spaciano made seven field goals in the middle quarters as Dallas took a 30-28 halftime lead and expanded it to 50-39 going to the fourth quarter.

The Lady Mountaineers then held the Lady Cougars to a Shults field goal in the fourth quarter while going 9-for-10 from the line and outscoring Hazleton Area, 13-2.

In other Wednesday night WVC Division 1 girls basketball games:

Berwick 38, Tunkhannock 35

Rachel Whitenight scored 13 points to lead Berwick to the win.

Tunkhannock led going to the fourth quarter before Abby Hess scored six of her eight points for the Lady Bulldogs.

Sable Stephens led Crestwood with 19 points.

Crestwood 55, Wilkes-Barre Area 47

Keira Dougherty scored 24 points to lead Crestwood to the home-court victory that prevented Wilkes-Barre Area from joining the second-place tie.

Eternity Aiken had 23 points for the Wolfpack, which never led.
