Honesdale gave itself a shot going into the final bout, but both District 2 champions lost Thursday in first-round matches of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Dual Meet Wrestling Championships at the Giant Center in Hershey.
Burgettstown defeated Honesdale, 34-27, in Class 2A.
Nazareth downed Delaware Valley, 48-15, in Class 3A.
Both teams have Friday morning consolation matches.
Honesdale pulled out three straight decisions from 139 through 152 pounds to get within, 30-27, before the match was decided at 160.
T.J. Martin won a two-point decision at 139, Joey Giannetti pulled out a one-point win at 145 and Mason Avery won a major decision at 152.
Paul Renner, at 215, and Josh Young, at 121, won first-period pins for the Hornets. Joel Landry won by technical fall at 189.
Delaware Valley closed the gap on Nazareth since winning just one bout in the season opener, but still fell in Class 3A.
Nazareth opened a 22-0 lead in the first four bouts from 189 through 285, then at 107 pounds.
Landon Machado, at 114, and Luke Brazanskas, at 152, had pins for the Hornets. Dom Moyer won a decision at 133.
Honesdale is scheduled to face United in the first consolation round at 9 a.m. Delaware Valley faces LaSalle at 10:30.
Each tournament started with 20 teams, but a Monday preliminary round trimmed the field to the 16 teams that arrived in Hershey for the double-elimination portion of the event.
