District 2 is sending 13 competitors to the Class 3A portion of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual Wrestling Championships Thursday through Saturday at The Giant Center in Hershey.
Abington Heights 107-pounder Luke Sirianni, Pittston Area 160-pounder Jimmy Spindler and Crestwood 215-pounder Magnus Bibla lead the group after finishing second in the Class 3A Northeast Regional March 3-4 at Bethlehem Liberty.
The top four finishers in each weight class in Bethlehem qualified for the state tournament.
Sirianni and Spindler were each shut out while losing decisions in the final and Bibla was pinned in the second period.
Bethlehem Catholic and Nazareth separated themselves from the field in the 42-team tournament, finishing first and second with 231 ½ points.
Abington Heights finished fifth with 86 points, Wyoming Valley West was seventh with 50½, Crestwood eighth with 50 and West Scranton 11th with 46.
The fifth-place Comets are sending four wrestlers to Hershey.
Brian Heard, at 152, and Caleb Marzolino, at 189, advanced by placing third. Austin Smith was fourth at 139 where he lost on the ultimate tiebreaker in the consolation final to finish fourth.
Heard won the consolation final by shutout while Marzolino posted a pin in 1:22.
West Scranton’s Tyson Cook took third at 114, also winning a decision by shutout.
Dorian Hoffman from Wyoming Valley West (107), Simon Zamudio from Hazleton Area (121), Michael Turi from West Scranton (127), Gunnar Myers from Wallenpaupack (133), Lincoln Bibla from Crestwood (189) and Aiden Black from Delaware Valley (285) joined Smith as fourth-place finishers.
Fifth-place finishers are alternates who could end up in Hershey if someone withdraws before the state tournament starts.
Delaware Valley’s Landon Machado (114), Dom Moyer (133) and C.J. Walton (215) joined West Scranton’s Martin Turi (145) and Wallenpaupack’s Henry Baronowski (215) finished fifth.
West Scranton’s Jason Williams, Pittston Area’s Dominic Innamorati (139) and Wyoming Valley West’s Mason Sgarlat (160) and Joe Rivas (172) all placed sixth.
