A trio of Wyoming Valley Conference swimmers matched third-place state finishes Thursday to lead District 2 boys on the second and final day of Class 2A competition Thursday in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships at Bucknell University.
MMI Prep junior Woobie Kupsky followed up Wednesday’s state title in the 200-yard individual medley by finishing third in the 500 freestyle.
Maddoc Watkins from Dallas, in the 100 freestyle, and Zhantore Akylbekov from Wyoming Seminary, in the 100 breaststroke, also finished third.
The top eight in each event qualified for the finals and earned medals. The next eight competed in the B Final and scored points for their teams by finishing in the top 16.
Dallas finished 10th in the 400 freestyle relay, the last event of the meet. The relay team consisted of Tommy Doran, Jacob Hoegen, Landon Davey and Watkins.
Dunmore’s Luke Healey finished 13th in the 100 breaststroke.
Erie Cathedral Prep outscored Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt, 194-164, for the team title.
Dallas was 16th with 47 points. MMI Prep was 19th with 36 and Wyoming Seminary was 21st with 34.
The Class 3A state championships are being conducted Friday and Saturday at Bucknell.
