Abington Heights has followed up its Lackawanna League and District 2 Class 3A boys tennis titles from last season by matching the best record early this season.
The 5-0 start has helped the Comets claim the No. 1 spot in the season’s first Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Boys Tennis Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
The rankings were released Friday morning.
Dallas, last season’s No. 1, opens in the second spot. The Mountaineers won the Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2 Class 2A titles last season and were the only district team to win a state team tournament match.
The Mountaineers, however, have lost the Chesman brothers, Kyle and Tucker, who won the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class 2A doubles championship.
Delaware Valley is third with the help of a 4-0 start, including a victory over perennial power Scranton Prep.
Holy Cross matches Abington Heights at 5-0 and is ranked fourth. The Crusaders, who had a losing record last season, handed Valley View its only loss in five matches.
Scranton Prep, Valley View, Wyoming Area and Wyoming Seminary round out the rankings.
Wyoming Area is 2-0 with a win over Wyoming Seminary, last year’s final No. 3 team.
