Rankings shuffle behind leaders

While four highly regarded teams maintained their status by remaining perfect in dominant fashion, there was movement immediately behind those teams in the updated Riverfront Sports Super Six Softball Power Rankings, which were posted Thursday morning.

Elk Lake, Abington Heights and Holy Redeemer all moved up this week while North Pocono and Holy Cross joined the rankings.

Unbeatens Pittston Area, Tunkhannock and Valley View remained 1-2-3 among Big Schools and Mid Valley held the top spot among Small Schools.

Mid Valley is followed by two teams that while not perfect overall are unbeaten within District 2.

Elk Lake moved up from third to second, swapping places with Lake-Lehman.

The four unbeaten teams combined to win nine games during the week by a total of 112-9 and are 21-0 by a combined margin of 252-15 on the season.

That dominance cannot continue.

Defending Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class 5A champion Pittston Area takes its No. 1 ranking to play at No. 2 Tunkhannock, which played in the last two state Class 4A finals, for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 lead.

Valley View remained in third by beating Scranton, 15-2, and Scranton Prep, 19-0.

Abington Heights moved up from sixth to fourth with two wins, including 8-6 over West Scranton to avenge a loss in a playoff for the Lackawanna League Division 1 title last season.

North Pocono joined the rankings in fifth with a 2-1 week while facing three teams that opened the season among the Super Six Big Schools. The Lady Trojans fell to Pittston Area, 3-2, in the only game any of the unbeatens played that was decided by fewer than seven runs. They also beat Wallenpaupack, which dropped from fourth to sixth, and West Scranton, which fell from the rankings.

Mid Valley shut out three straight opponents, beating Dunmore by 15, Western Wayne 14 and Lakeland 11 to increase its season margin to 83-1.

Elk Lake moved up by shutting out Wyoming Area, 5-0, and handling Montrose, 13-2.

Lake-Lehman had a 3-1 week with the loss coming to District 4’s Shikellamy.

Holy Redeemer moved up two places to fourth with a 19-0 rout of Hanover Area in its only game.

Riverside held fifth with three wins.

Holy Cross joined the rankings in sixth, knocking Old Forge out with a 6-5 victory and also beating Western Wayne, 19-9.
