Here are some of the day’s highlights:
MAIN EVENT
State javelin champion Drew Mruk led the way as the Wyoming Area boys track and field team became one of two teams in District 2 to clinch ties for first place in their divisions.
The Warriors easily handled host Tunkhannock, one of three teams to enter the day in a second-place tie, 109-38, to improve to 5-0 with one meet remaining in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2.
Mruk won the shot put, discus and javelin as Wyoming Area outscored Tunkhannock, 24-3, in the throws.
ALSO CLINCHING
Abington Heights swept Valley View, 5-0, to clinch no worse than a tie for first place in Lackawanna League boys tennis.
The Comets improved to 12-0 with one match remaining.
Only Holy Cross, with one loss, still has a chance to tie the Comets.
Valley View fell to 9-3.
The Comets were the second team from Abington Heights to clinch at least a tie for first place. The school’s girls team had already locked up at least a tie in Lackawanna Track Conference Division 1 for the only clinching prior to this week.
TOP PERFORMERS
Isabella Caporuscio, Crestwood girls lacrosse – Caporuscio scored six goals and dished out four assists, including the 100th of her career, to get first-place Crestwood through its closest match of the Wyoming Valley Conference season with a 15-11 win over Hazleton Area.
Joseph Curreri, Honesdale baseball – Curreri struck out 12 and came within an out of a no-hitter in a 6-4 win over Mid Valley in a Lackawanna Division first-place battle. He also singled, doubled and drove in a run.
Jack Herron, Wyoming Seminary boys lacrosse – Herron scored nine goals and assisted on two in a 17-6 victory at Lake-Lehman in the WVC.
Zach Lloyd, West Scranton baseball – Lloyd threw his second straight shutout, a two-hitter and doubled in the game’s only runs in the seventh inning as West Scranton downed Scranton, 2-0, in a Lackawanna Division 1 baseball game at PNC Field.
Maranda Runco, Mid Valley softball – Runco homered twice, walked twice, scored three runs and drove in three while throwing a one-hitter with six strikeouts in Mid Valley’s 15-0, four-inning rout of Honesdale in Lackawanna League Division 2.
DOMINANCE CONTINUES
Fresh off performances that earned them the latest Center City Print/NEPASportsNation.com District 2 Baseball and Softball Player of the Week awards, Hazleton Area’s Brett Antolick and Pittston Area’s Gianna Adams were again outstanding.
Antolick threw five no-hit innings in a 4-0 victory over Bethlehem Liberty to avenge a loss in last year’s Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state Class 6A baseball semifinal.
Adams homered for the fourth time in three games and threw a one-hitter in Pittston Area’s 12-0, five innings Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 softball rout of Wyoming Valley West.

KEY CONTRIBUTORS
Matt Swartz, Wyoming Seminary boys lacrosse – Swartz had five goals and three assists in the win over Lake-Lehman.
Jordan Castrine, Hazleton Area baseball – Castrine struck out four and did not walk a batter while working the last two innings of the combined no-hitter with Antolick during the win over Bethlehem Liberty.
TOP DEVELOPMENTS
The North Pocono and Honesdale baseball teams and Lake-Lehman softball team all solidified division leads with wins over the second-place teams.
North Pocono is 7-0 in the division and up two games on Abington Heights and at least four games on the other six teams in Lackawanna Division 1 after beating the host Comets, 5-2.
Gavin Chillot struck out eight in 5 2/3 innings to get the win. Mike Paciotti, who had another hit, a stolen base and a run scored, delivered a two-run single in the top of the seventh to open the lead to 5-1.
Jeremy Staples also had two hits and scored a run. Chris Walsh homered and Ty LaFave doubled.
Honesdale and host Mid Valley shared the Lackawanna Division 2 baseball lead at 6-0 going into the game.
The Hornets built a 6-0 lead, then held on when the Spartans scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh when Chillot left after reaching his pitch limit. Chillot walked five and Honesdale finished with a combined two-hitter.
Max Mickel singled, doubled and drove in two runs. Trent Gombita joined Chillot with a single, double and one RBI.
Freshman Hannah Chipego held Holy Redeemer scoreless into the bottom of the seventh inning and Ava Hudak went 3-for-4 to lead Lake-Lehman’s 10-1 victory.
The Lady Knights are 7-0 in WVC Division 2 and have a two-game lead after Holy Redeemer fell into a second-place tie with Wyoming Area at 5-2.
Lucy Honeywell and Rylie Bucknavage each added two hits and two RBI.
QUICK HITS
Old Forge entered the bottom of the seventh scoreless and trailing by five runs before Meghan Marianelli hit a two-run homer in the seventh and Talia Piragas added a walk-off, two-run shot in the eighth to beat rival Riverside, 7-5, in a Lackawanna Division 2 softball game.
Kylie Mastillo’s three-run, sixth-inning homer helped North Pocono outslug Abington Heights, 11-10, in a Lackawanna Division 1 softball game.
Wyoming Area scored 12 runs in the top of the first inning on the way to a 16-1, three-inning victory over Wyoming Seminary in WVC Division 2 softball.
Brady Quinn scored four times to lead eight multiple-goal scorers in Delaware Valley’s 22-1, WVC boys lacrosse rout of Lakeland.
Roman Valvano had a double and two-run single to help Scranton Prep defeat Wallenpaupack, 7-5, in a Lackawanna Division 1 baseball game.
Madelyn Keating set a school record by winning the 800 meters in 2:14 as the Wyoming Area girls joined the school’s boys team as the only track and field teams with 5-0 divisional records when the Lady Warriors also won at Tunkhannock, 83-57.
BY THE NUMBERS
Pittston Area had six extra-base hits in just five innings against Wyoming Valley West.
Bella Giardina doubled twice while joining Maura Mihalka in each producing 3 of the team’s 14 hits.
Ava Callahan and Cassie Hintze also doubled while Samantha Herbert tripled and Adams homered.
