After scoring more than 1,000 points at Lafayette College, Leo O’Boyle will use his final year of college basketball eligibility to play as a graduate student on scholarship at Penn State.
The Scranton Prep graduate announced his decision on Twitter Tuesday night.
“Bet on yourself, work hard and the sky is the limit,” the post on O’Boyle’s Twitter account read. “This process has been extra stressful for me.
“That being said, I am proud to announce I have committed to Penn State University for my graduate year.”
O’Boyle will become part of a team being built through the transfer portal for Mike Rhoades’ first season as head coach. He was the sixth player Rhoades signed through the portal since coming from National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I tournament qualifier Virginia Commonwealth to take over the Big Ten program.
At Lafayette, O’Boyle played in 109 games, making 87 starts and scoring 1,027 points.
The leading scorer for the Leopards, O’Boyle averaged 11.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists as a senior. The 6-foot-7 forward made 40.7 percent of his 3-pointers, boosting his career mark to 37.5 percent, and hit 86.4 percent from the free throw line.
O’Boyle was a Patriot League All-Tournament Team selection.
The last time he played at Penn State, O’Boyle excelled. He led Lafayette with 19 points in 26 minutes during a November loss in State College, 70-57. O’Boyle was 6-for-9 from the floor in the game, including 4-for-5 on 3-pointers and 3-for-3 from the line.
Penn State reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament while finishing 23-14. The Nittany Lions were 10-10 in the Big Ten.
