The Holy Cross offense showed it was ready for the start of the postseason.
The Lady Crusaders scored 11 runs in the first inning Monday afternoon on the way to a 14-1, five-inning rout of visiting Montrose in a District 2 Class 2A softball quarterfinal.
Gianna Coroniti’s three-run double highlighted the big first inning for Holy Cross.
The Lady Crusaders had just four hits, but three of them were doubles, while taking advantage of a dozen Montrose walks.
Ava Schmidt singled in two runs for a 3-0 lead and Grace Rogers doubled in two more to make it 5-0. Coriniti’s one-out hit made it 9-0.
The Lady Crusaders had the lead at 11-0 with just one out and that out came on a runner trying to move up on Schmidt’s RBI single.
The offensive outburst came between a pair of 1-2-3 innings in which Mia Scalese struck out two batters each time.
Scalese struck out six while giving up three hits in four innings. Ava Schmidt pitched a scoreless fifth and struck out two more.
Schmidt went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored.
Second-seeded Holy Cross (13-8) advances to host sixth-seeded Lakeland (8-11) Wednesday at 4:30. Lakeland advanced by winning at Blue Ridge, 9-8, in 10 innings.
