SCRANTON – Elk Lake made the most of its two hits in the May 30 District 2 Class 2A softball championship game.
Leah Traver’s home run and Amanda Voll’s triple helped the Lady Warriors beat Holy Cross in a one-run title game for the third straight year, posting a 2-1 victory at the University of Scranton.
Voll tossed a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and set up the game-winning run.
The game was scoreless until Holy Cross got an unearned run in the top of the sixth.
Chloe Mendicino reached on a bunt single, moved up on a sacrifice and scored on an error.
Traver broke up Mia Scalese’s no-hitter after 5 2/3 innings and tied the game with her inside-the-park home run.
Voll then led off the seventh with her triple.
Holy Cross issued two intentional walks to load the bases and got a force at the plate on a bunt for the second out of the inning.
The Lady Crusaders, however, were not able to handle the ball Hannah Howell put in play in the infield and Megan Johns scored on the error.
Elk Lake (19-2) used the title to advance into the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association state tournament where it will open Monday at 1 p.m. at Tunkhannock against District 11 champion Minersville (15-8).
