Comets receive softball forfeit

Abington Heights has become the first team to advance to this year’s state softball quarterfinals.

The Comets learned Monday morning that they would not have to take the field later in the day.

The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association announced on its Twitter account at 10:10 a.m. that Franklin Towne Charter from Philadelphia “has voluntarily withdrawn from the baseball and softball tournaments.”

The announcement said that because of the late notice, the Franklin Towne Charter teams will not be replaced in the state tournaments.

The Abington Heights softball and Greencastle-Antrim baseball teams, both in Class 5A, advance with 7-0 forfeit victories.

Abington Heights had been scheduled to play a 4:30 game at Marywood University.

The Comets will play Thursday against the winner of the game between District 1 champion Oxford (20-3) and District 3 third-place finisher Greencastle-Antrim (18-5).
