Wyoming Area won a District 2 boys tennis team tournament match for the first time in school history Friday when the Warriors edged MMI Prep, 3-2, in a District 2 Class 2A preliminary match.
The match was the only one needed to trim the field to eight teams each in Class 2A and 3A heading into Monday.
Most quarterfinals are scheduled for Monday, but Wyoming Area will play at undefeated, top-seed Scranton Prep, the Lackawanna League champion, Tuesday. The Wyoming Area School District has called off athletics Saturday through Monday as a COVID-19 precaution.
The district semifinals and finals are scheduled for Wednesday at Kirby Park.
Adam Wisnewski and Jacob Nelson posted singles victories before the No. 2 doubles team of Gabriel Cable-Nick Winsock clinched the team victory.
Wisnewski defeated Zander Spear, 6-2, 6-2.
Nelson, who moved into the singles lineup after playing doubles the first half of the season, downed Ryan McNelis, 6-2, 6-4, at third singles.
Cable-Winsock defeated Ethan Stine-Dustin Paul, 6-0, 6-1, at second doubles.
MMI Prep’s points came at second singles and first doubles.
Christian Boland defeated Sean Burke, 6-2, 6-3. Noah Long-Tom Mayernik topped Charles Alfano-Anthony Nelson, 5-7, 6-3, 6-2.
Wyoming Area (6-4) had lost in the 2018 and 2019 tournaments to Dunmore and Holy Cross in a pair of 3-2 matches. The 2019 match with Holy Cross was the program’s only previous quarterfinal appearance.
MMI Prep (5-6) forced its way into the tournament as a ninth team by finishing the regular season with a .500 overall record. District 2 rules call for the tournament to include the top eight teams in a rating system, plus any others that finish .500 or better.
