Wyoming Sem wrestling coach takes position at Army West Point

Scott Green, Wyoming Seminary’s Director of Wrestling Operations and head boys wrestling coach, has accepted the position of associate head coach at The United States Military Academy at West Point, according to a Friday announcement from Sem’s Leadership Cabinet.

Green was a transformative figure in Wyoming Seminary’s rise as one of the nation’s top college prep wrestling programs. He was hired as head coach of the boys wrestling team in 2010. Green transitioned into Director of Wrestling Operations earlier this year, continuing to serve as head coach of the boys team while also serving as a leader within the girls team.

Under Green’s leadership, the Blue Knights won National Prep Championships in 2014 and 2020 and were consistently ranked in the top five prep school teams nationally.

“Scott Green has had a tremendous and long-lasting impact on Wyoming Seminary,” Leadership Cabinet member Julie Bean, Sem’s Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, said. “Scott has served as a teacher, admission professional and coach who cares deeply about students, student-athletes and their futures beyond Sem. Scott has always been a positive influence and visionary within the community. Among his many accomplishments, Scott spearheaded bringing the first girls wrestling program to Sem, partnering with USA Wrestling to become an accelerated, elite development program for Team USA. Prior to transitioning to Director of Wrestling Operations, he onboarded and welcomed new families to Wyoming Seminary as Interim Director of Domestic Admission and Athletic Liaison to Admissions.

“After more than a decade at Sem, Scott leaves behind an incredible legacy. We are very excited for Scott and wish him well in his new role.”

Green amassed a 208-9 record in dual meets since 2010, guiding the Blue Knights to 14 straight Pennsylvania Prep Championships. During Green’s tenure at Sem, 100 wrestlers earned individual state titles, while 41 won National Prep titles.

“I’m proud of the work I have done at Sem after taking over the program from the legendary John Gordon,” Green said. “The results on the mat have been great, but I’m just as proud of the student-athletes buying into our process and using wrestling as a platform to open doors for their futures.

“The boys and girls that wrestle at Sem are tremendous ambassadors of the sport and the institution and live up to the values of the school every day.”

Prior to joining Sem, Green coached at his alma mater, Binghamton University, and internationally, leading United States athletes to titles in Amsterdam, Cuba, Hungary and Puerto Rico.

At West Point, Green will join a program that despite the numerous challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, saw seven wrestlers qualify for the NCAA Championships. Also, the Black Knights won two individual Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association titles, had five total EIWA finalists and placed third as a team at the tournament while amassing the second-most team points in program history.

“Coaching at West Point is an incredible opportunity. I am thrilled to get back into a Division I wrestling role,” Green said. “Kevin Ward has the team headed in the right direction and I am confident I can add to that momentum. Once you set foot on campus, you know what a special institution it is. The USMA molds tomorrow’s leaders in their time there, and wrestling fits into that formula very nicely.”

In addition to his roles in the wrestling programs, Green taught upper-level English electives at Sem and has worked in the Admissions Office.

Green will aid school administrators as they begin the nationwide search for the new candidate.
