Shawn Pawlowski had a hat trick as Wyoming Area expanded its Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 boys soccer lead Thursday when it rolled to a 6-1 victory over visiting Holy Redeemer, the team that began the day in second place.
Pawlowski helped Wyoming Area open a 6-0 lead on the way to improving to 7-0 in the division and 10-1 overall.
Trevor Kruszka made nine saves and kept Holy Redeemer (5-3, 6-5) scoreless until John Gillespie connected with less than three minutes remaining.
Kendall Heck and Liam Burke each added a goal and two assists for the Warriors.
Nanticoke edged Hanover Area, 2-1, in the other WVC Division 2 game.
Dallas shut out Berwick, 2-0, in a WVC Division 1 game.
West Scranton defeated Mid Valley, 5-2, in a Lackawanna League Division 3 game.
FIELD HOCKEY
Wallenpaupack also added to its WVC Division 2 lead by winning at home over the second-place team, downing Nanticoke, 2-1.
The defending champion Lady Buckhorns are 5-0-1 and 6-2-1. The Trojanettes slipped to 4-2 and 4-5.
Mia Mariggi scored twice to help Pittston Area defeat Tunkhannock, 4-2, in the other WVC Division 2 game.
Northwest downed Hanover Area, 3-2, in a non-league game.
GIRLS SOCCER
Kaylee Zimmer scored two goals as Dunmore shut out Western Wayne, 3-0, in a game between two of the five teams jammed within a game of first place in Lackawanna League Division 2 girls soccer when the day began.
The Lady Bucks improved to 6-2. Western Wayne is 4-2 and 4-2-1.
Mountain View shut out Holy Cross, 3-0, in another Lackawanna Division 2 game.
Allison Billard made 12 saves to allow Honesdale to overcome an Abington Heights shot advantage and play to a 0-0 tie in Lackawanna League Division 1.
It was the second scoreless tie in three games this week for the Comets.
The other three Lackawanna Division 1 games also ended in shutouts, including Delaware Valley remaining undefeated with a 3-0 win over Valley View. Wallenpaupack shut out Scranton, 7-0, and Scranton Prep blanked North Pocono, 4-0.
In all, 11 of the day’s 12 games were shutouts.
Carbondale beat Forest City, 1-0, and West Scranton beat Mid Valley, 3-0, in Lackawanna Division 3.
Megan MacNeely had the goal as Dallas defeated Berwick, 1-0, in WVC Division 1.
Dallas is 6-1 and 8-1-1. Berwick is 3-3 and 6-3.
Wilkes-Barre Area blanked Hazleton Area, 6-0, while Crestwood and Wyoming Valley West played to a scoreless tie in the division’s other games.
Pittston Area defeated Tunkhannock, 2-1, in a non-league game.
GIRLS TENNIS
Scranton Prep won a rematch of the 2020 District 2 Class 2A championship match that it also won.
The Classics defeated visiting Riverside, 3-2, to secure second place in the Lackawanna League and gain the edge over the Lady Vikes in seeding for the upcoming district tournament.
Scranton Prep is 11-1. Riverside is 8-2.
Number-one singles player Gabrielle Chantiloupe posted victories of both extremes when West Scranton swept through a doubleheader at home, beating both Mid Valley and Montrose by 5-0 scores.
Chantiloupe had to rally to get past Mid Valley’s Katie Glinsky, 4-6, 6-2, 10-8, in the closest match of the doubleheader, then had one of West Scranton’s 6-0, 6-0 wins against Montrose.
Madison Maloney, against Mid Valley, and the doubles teams of Camilla Sphabmixay-Gianna Tallo and Molly Donovan-Isabella Gigliotti also had 6-0, 6-0 wins against Montrose.
In other Lackawanna League matches: North Pocono edged Wallenpaupack, 3-2; Holy Cross shut out Dunmore, 5-0; Honesdale defeated Western Wayne, 4-1; and Valley View topped Delaware Valley, 4-1.
Dallas held on to second place in the WVC by defeating Crestwood, 4-1, in a meeting of ranked teams.
Wally Flynn, Audrey DelGaudio, Janet Federici-Danielle Konnick and Danielle Blessner-Chloe Dudick won in straight sets for Dallas (10-1) without allowing any sets to be extended beyond 6-2.
Hannah Ziegler won in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 1 singles for Crestwood (7-3, 8-3) when she topped Caroline Stallard, 6-1, 0-6, 7-6 (7-5).
Dallas is 9-1. Crestwood is 7-3 and 8-3.
Berwick defeated Tunkhannock, 3-2, in the other WVC match.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Pittston Area and Berwick swept WVC matches in three sets.
Jiana Moran had 12 assists, 9 service points and 4 aces in Pittston Area’s 25-22, 25-18, 25-20 victory over Wyoming Valley West.
Emily Dietrick had 14 points with 2 aces. Emma Rinaldi had five points, four kills and four blocks.
Cecelia Isenberg had 23 kills and Morgan Nevel had 28 assists when Berwick defeated Lake-Lehman, 25-9, 25-12. 25-19.
Kaylee Hacker had 17 service points, 4 aces and 2 kills for Berwick. Camille Pinterich had 9 points, 2 aces and 11 digs.
Nevel also had nine points, seven aces, six digs and a block while Isenberg had five digs.
Crestwood needed five sets to get past Tunkhannock in the other WVC match.
Kaeli Romanowski racked up 43 assists and Katherine Shepherd 23 kills as Western Wayne maintained its Lackawanna Division 1 lead by defeating Dunmore in a tight, four-set match.
The Lady Wildcats won, 25-22, 22-25, 28-26, 27-25.
Abington Heights defeated Elk Lake in four sets in a Lackawanna Division 1-2 crossover.
