Unbeaten District 2 champions Abington Heights and Wyoming Seminary will face their first-round opponents in a Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association girls tennis team tournament doubleheader Tuesday at Birchwood Racquet Club in Clarks Summit.
Each team will be looking to win one match to advance to the Hershey Indoor Racquet Club for the completion of the state tournament. Quarterfinals are set for Friday, then the semifinals and finals are Friday.
Lackawanna League champion Abington Heights will play District 1 third-place finisher Pennsbury in a Class 3A match at noon. If the Comets win, they will go to Hershey to play in the quarterfinals against the winner of the match between District champion Manheim Township and District 7 third-place finisher Peters Township.
Wyoming Valley Conference champion Wyoming Seminary will face District 11 champion Moravian Academy at 2 p.m. The winner goes to the quarterfinals to take on either District 10 champion Villa Maria Academy or District 7 runner-up Knoch.
The challenges are significant for both teams.
Manheim Township, the potential quarterfinal opponent, defeated Abington Heights, 5-0, in last year’s quarterfinals.
Wyoming Seminary is in an even tougher quadrant of its bracket.
Moravian Academy made it to last year’s final by beating Villa Maria in the semifinals, but then lost to Knoch in the state final.
