Tyler Wolfe threw passes for all three Hazleton Area touchdowns and the Cougars defense limited Wilkes-Barre Area to a fourth-quarter field goal while stopping the visiting Wolfpack, 24-3, in a District 2 Class 6A football semifinal Friday night.
Wolfe threw all three of his touchdown passes in the second half after Luke Russo’s 35-yard field goal in the closing seconds accounted for the only scoring of the first half. He finished 9-for-15 for 150 yards passing.
Matthew Cusatis and Matthew Buckman joined Wolfe in leading the offense and joined Ryan Matyas in leading the defense.
Matyas had 10 tackles, including a sack.
Cusatis caught third-quarter touchdown passes of 34 and 10 yards to give the Cougars a 17-0 lead. He finished with 3 catches for 58 yards while also intercepting a pass.
Buckman carried 19 times for 100 yards and was the team’s second-leading tackler with 7.
Evan Corcoran got Wilkes-Barre Area on the scoreboard and within two scores on a 35-yard field goal.
Wolfe then found Connor Kondrat with a clinching 30-yard touchdown pass.
Hazleton Area used the win to advance to the district final at Delaware Valley in a matchup of 8-3 teams. The game gives the Cougars another shot at the only team they lost to in the last nine weeks when they dropped a 14-9 decision to the Warriors at home.
Wilkes-Barre Area finishes 4-7. The Wolfpack lost the last 4 games while scoring just 27 points total.
