The Lackawanna Interscholastic Athletic Association is making minor changes to its soccer divisions for the next two-year cycle.
Four teams – two boys and two girls – will be in new divisions for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.
LIAA athletic directors are in the process of developing schedules or the next two-year sports cycle, the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. The first step in that process is agreeing on divisional alignments, which the LIAA did in many sports, including boys and girls soccer, earlier this month.
The West Scranton boys will move from Division 3 to Division 2 after two seasons to rebuild the program. The Invaders went 5-6 and 6-6 during that time.
Forest City will trade places with West Scranton, dropping from Division 2 to Division 3 where the Foresters are a more natural fit both geographically and in terms of enrollment. The Foresters sat out the league season in 2020 because of COVID and went 0-12 in 2021.
On the girls side, Scranton will drop down from Division 1 to Division 2 and Holy Cross will move from Division 2 to Division 3. Both are coming off last-place finishes.
Scranton went 2-23-1 in the recently completely two-year cycle while Holy Cross went 7-19-2.
The moves keep the distribution of eight teams in Division 1 and seven each in Divisions 2 and 3 for boys and more evenly balances the teams in girls, leaving seven in Division 1 and six each in Divisions 2 and 3 instead of eight, six and five.
