Two of the district’s top swimming programs open their league schedules to highlight Tuesday’s District 2 sports schedule.
Scranton Prep, which has the number-one ranked girls team and fifth-ranked boys team in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Swimming Rankings of District 2 teams, is home against Abington Heights in a Lackawanna League boys and girls meet.
The Classics are defending Lackawanna girls champions. Scranton Prep could face a bigger challenge on the boys side where Abington Heights is off to a 2-0 start.
Dallas, ranked third in girls and fourth in boys, is home against Berwick.
The other swim meet has Wallenpaupack against Valley View at Abington Heights in the Lackawanna League.
The basketball schedule includes Wyoming Area (4-2) at Pittston Area (4-0) in the sixth annual Tigue-Denisco Memorial girls game.
Both team Most Valuable Players from last season’s 39-36 Wyoming Area win over Pittston Area are back and leading their teams’ strong starts.
Morgan Janeski had 13 points and 16 rebounds, 8 offensive, for Wyoming Area in the February victory to earn the Tony Denisco Award.
Booth won the Tom Tigue Award as Pittston Area’s MVP with 19 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.
The MVP Award and a team championship cup were created in 2016 after the deaths of Denisco, the mayor of West Pittston in the Wyoming Area School District, and Tom Tigue, a 26-year state representative from Hughestown in the Pittston Area School District.
The first Denisco Award went to Addison Orzel after her 30-rebound effort in a 61-55 victory in January, 2017.
Overall, it is a comparatively light non-league schedule in boys and girls basketball.
There are both league and non-league wrestling matches.
Valley View is at Abington Heights and Scranton is at West Scranton in Lackawanna League Division 1; Western Wayne at Elk Lake in Lackawanna League Division 2; and Dallas is at Wyoming Area and Berwick is at Wyoming Valley West in non-league matches.
