Abington Heights boys No. 1 again

Playoff results produced a change in a No. 1 spot in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams for the second straight week.

Abington Heights returned to the top of District 2 Class 5A boys basketball and the Big School boys portion of the Super Six.

The new rankings were released early Monday morning.

Abington Heights traded places with Valley View, the team that beat the Comets out of the Lackawanna League Division 1 title in a playoff. The Comets moved from second to first after a 60-38 rout of West Scranton in Friday night’s district championship game.

Earlier in the tournament, the Comets shut down Lackawanna Division 2 champion North Pocono, 47-24, in the semifinals.

Valley View dropped to second after falling to Scranton Prep, 51-43, in the District 2 Class 4 final.

The Holy Redeemer boys, Scranton Prep girls and Dunmore girls all won titles to remain in the other No. 1 spots.

The Wyoming Valley West, Mountain View and Scranton girls all moved up as the result of big playoff wins.

Riverside also moved up in the boys rankings.

Scranton’s boys joined the rankings after a playoff victory while idle Carbondale returned to the Super Six.

Abington Heights and Valley View are followed in the Big School rankings by Dallas, Scranton Prep, Scranton and West Scranton.

Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 champion Dallas has already ended its season in Class 5A.

Scranton Prep held fourth with its District 2 Class 4A championship.

Scranton joined the rankings in fifth after running its winning streak to eight by winning the District 2-4 Class 6A championship over Williamsport Saturday night.

West Scranton fell from fifth to sixth after the loss to Abington Heights.

The top four held their spots in both sets of Small School rankings.

District Class 3A champion Holy Redeemer and Class 2A champion Holy Cross are followed by Mid Valley and Old Forge in Small School boys.

Mid Valley lost to Holy Redeemer in the 3A final. Old Forge’s season is over.

Riverside moved from sixth to fifth and Carbondale joined the rankings in sixth when Blue Ridge fell out of the rankings with a 61-26 loss to Holy Cross in the 2A championship game.

Dunmore, Lake-Lehman, Holy Redeemer and Montrose are first through fourth in Small School girls.

After regaining the No. 1 position a week ago, Dunmore beat Holy Redeemer, 50-30, in the Class 3A championship game.

WVC overall champion Lake-Lehman routed Mid Valley, 51-19, in the Class 3A third-place game to qualify for the state tournament.

Montrose won the district Class 2A title.

Mountain View traded places with Western Wayne, moving from sixth to fifth, after capturing the District 2-11 Class A Subregional title.

Scranton Prep, Pittston Area and Abington Heights remain 1-2-3 in the Big School girls rankings.

Scranton Prep won the district Class 4A title and Pittston Area defeated Abington Heights, 36-32, for the Class 5A championship.

Wyoming Valley West and Scranton each gained a spot into fifth and sixth.

Wyoming Valley West won the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional title.

Scranton defeated Wallenpaupack for the district’s third spot in the Class 5A playoffs.

Wallenpaupack had its season end and dropped from fourth to sixth.
