Abington Heights clinches at least tie for 1st in Division 1 girls soccer

Maggie Ratchford assisted one second-half goal and scored the other Monday night when visiting Abington Heights defeated Scranton Prep, 2-0, in a key Lackawanna League Division 1 game.

The victory, combined with Valley View’s 2-1 overtime loss at Delaware Valley, allowed Abington Heights to clinch no worse than a tie for first place in the division.

Abington Heights is 7-1-1 in the division and 15-1-1 overall. The Comets, unbeaten in their last 14 games, can clinch at home Wednesday against North Pocono.

Valley View slipped to 7-2-1 and 12-3-1. Delaware Valley is 6-3 and 9-4.

Following a scoreless first half, Bryan Stiles scored 2:17 into the second half off a Maggie Ratchford assist.

Emma Ratchford assisted Maggie Ratchford’s goal with 7:36 left.

Abington Heights dominated throughout with a 20-4 shot advantage and an 8-0 lead in corner kicks.

Cassie McPherson made three saves for the shutout.

Nina Beistline had eight saves for the Classics.

Gia Ciardullo beat the regulation buzzer with the tying goal, then score the winning goal in overtime for Delaware Valley.
