Abington Heights takes over No. 1

Abington Heights won its season-opening tournament.

Lackawanna Trail finished second.

As a result, the teams are now 1-2 in that order in the first in-season update of the Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Wrestling Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Abington Heights over Lackawanna Trail represents a swap of the positioning from last season’s final rankings and the preseason rankings released last week.

The new rankings were revealed Friday afternoon as another weekend of primarily tournament action for district teams was getting started.

Five teams improved their positions this week.

Honesdale, Pittston Area and Wyoming Valley West also moved up while Montrose joined the rankings.

Abington Heights is 6-0, outscoring opponents 382-57 with the five matches needed to win the Battle of Bethlehem Duals plus one non-league match.

Lackawanna Trail slipped from first to second after finishing second at the Rough Rider Invitational at Catasauqua.

Honesdale went 4-2 at the same event to move from fourth to third, passing Delaware Valley, which took 12th of 24 teams at the Cumberland Valley Kickoff Classic.

Fifth-ranked Wallenpaupack is 6-0 after winning the Gary Woodruff Memorial Duals at Wyalusing Valley.

Pittston Area moved from seventh to sixth after winning its first four matches in the Woodruff Duals before losing the final to Wallenpaupack.

Montrose’s 3-3 start included beating Wyoming Area, the only team to fall from the rankings, at the Woodruff Duals.
