Abington Heights, Valley View take top two Big School girls spots

Abington Heights and Valley View have made their way into sharing the Lackawanna League Division 1 girls lead and, with it, they have taken over the top two Big School girls spots in the latest Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The new rankings were released at noon Thursday.

Abington Heights and Valley View each moved up two spots, making the top three in the Big School girls rankings the three teams that share pieces of the Lackawanna Division 1 lead. Delaware Valley is ranked third.

The Crestwood and Wyoming Area girls also moved up this week, along with the North Pocono and Hazleton Area boys. The Wilkes-Barre Area boys, Lakeland boys and Berwick girls all joined the rankings.

Abington Heights and Valley View have the best two overall girls records in District 2 in any classification.

On a week when the former No. 1 and No. 2 teams lost, they kept rolling.

Crestwood avenged an earlier 4-1 loss by routing Dallas, 6-0. That result allowed the Lady Comets to go from fifth to fourth and drop the Mountaineers from first all the way to fifth.

Valley View handed Delaware Valley its first league, first in-state and second overall loss, 2-1, to drop the Lady Warriors from second to third.

Abington Heights beat Scranton Prep, 8-0, and Lake-Lehman, 3-0, to take over No. 1. The Comets are on a six-game winning streak in which they have outscored opponents, 27-1, and posted five straight shutouts.

Valley View has the best record at 9-1. The Cougars’ other game during the week was a 6-0 victory over Honesdale for their fifth shutout of the season.

Berwick shut out all three opponents during the week to move into the sixth spot, replacing North Pocono.

The other sets of rankings are much more stable with the Abington Heights boys, Holy Cross boys and Holy Redeemer girls holding on to No. 1 positions. Holy Cross and Holy Redeemer remained in the Small School No. 1 spots despite being tied by the No. 3 teams.

Abington Heights now has both No. 1 teams with its boys holding the only perfect record in District 2 to remain first in Big Schools.

The Comets reached 9-0 by edging Wallenpaupack, 2-1, then pounding Scranton, 10-0.

Dallas and Wyoming Area held on to second and third despite each suffering a loss.

North Pocono and Hazleton Area moved up one spot to fourth and fifth. North Pocono shut out three Lackawanna Division 1 opponents and lost a game outside the district. Hazleton Area won two WVC Division 1 games for a three-game winning streak to even its overall record.

Wilkes-Barre Area joined the rankings in sixth after beating the second- and third-ranked teams, but losing to Hazleton Area.

Delaware Valley fell from the rankings.

The first five in Small School boys remained the same.

Holy Cross and Holy Redeemer are 1-2, each with unbeaten records that include one tie.

With a 53-5 scoring margin to go along with its 7-0-1 record, the Crusaders held on to first.

Holy Redeemer won three times during the week.

Dunmore won its other game to match Abington Heights for the most wins in the district and hold on to third.

Wyoming Seminary and Lake-Lehman each went 3-0-1 with the tie coming against each other to remain in the fourth and fifth spots.

Lakeland won both its Lackawanna Division 2 games to take over the sixth spot from Scranton Prep, which lost twice.

The only change in Small School girls is Wyoming Area using the tie with No. 1 Holy Redeemer to move from third to second when Lake-Lehman dropped two games. The Lady Warriors and Lady Knights trade spots.

Montrose, Lakeland and Honesdale went a combined 6-1-1 to remain in fourth, fifth and second. The only loss came when Honesdale faced No. 2 Big School Valley View.
