ALUMNI REPORT: D-I basketball

Wednesday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I basketball schedule included four games with District 2 graduates playing or serving as head coach.

Here is a recap of how each did:

DA’MIR FAISON, NEW JERSEY INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY MEN

Wednesday’s result

New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) (7-18 overall, 4-8 America East) lost at Binghamton (12-13 overall, 8-4 America East), 86-67

Individual statistics

Came off the bench, played 17 minutes; 3/4 FG, 4/6 FT, 10 points; 3 offensive, 2 defensive, 5 total rebounds; 1 block.

Notes

Faison scored a season-high 10 points, 8 of which came after halftime, in the loss to Binghamton. … Trailing, 42-33, at halftime, NJIT was able to cut the deficit to five twice in the first few minutes of the second half, but Binghamton broke the game open with a run and led by as many as 21. … NJIT’s Adam Hess scored a career-high 23 points. He and Faison were the only two Highlanders to score in double figures.

LEO O’BOYLE, LAFAYETTE COLLEGE MEN

Lafayette (9-19 overall, 7-8 Patriot League) lost at Loyola (Md.) (10-18 overall, 5-10 Patriot League), 73-70

Individual statistics

Started, played 28 minutes; 1/6 FG, 1/4 on 3-pointers, 3 points; 2 offensive, 3 defensive, 5 total rebounds; 1 assist; 1 turnover.

Notes

Loyola shot 53.6 percent from the field (15-for-28) in the first half to take a 39-23 halftime lead. … Lafayette made a strong comeback effort in the second half, outscoring Loyola, 47-34, but came up just short. … Lafayette’s Josh Rivera made a 3-pointer from the top of the key with 21 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one-point. Loyola’s Kenneth Jones made two free throws six seconds later  to give the Greyhounds a three-point lead. Lafayette called a timeout at halfcourt but 3-point attempts by Rivera and Devin Hines were off the mark, preserving Loyola’s win.

CECELIA COLLINS, BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY WOMEN

Bucknell (12-13 overall, 8-6 Patriot League) won at American (6-19 overall, 5-9 Patriot League), 64-52

Notes

Bucknell extended its win-streak to six games with the win over American. … Collins’ streak of 13 double-digit scoring games came to an end. … Bucknell outscored American, 39-25, over the middle two quarters to pull away and secure the win. … Bucknell shot 43.6 percent (24-for-55) from the field while the Bison defense held American to 38.9 percent (21-for-54) from the field, including 25 percent (2-for-8) from 3-point range.

BECKY BURKE, UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO WOMEN

Buffalo (9-13 overall, 4-9 MAC) lost to visiting Kent State (16-8 overall, 8-5 MAC), 72-69

Notes

Buffalo’s Re’Shawna Stone scored a career-high 36 points on 13-for-20 shooting but the Bulls came up one possession short as a desperation heave at the buzzer missed the mark. Stone is the first Bull to score 30 or more points since Dyaisha Fair scored 30 in the MAC Championship game last season. … The University at Buffalo held a 44-36 halftime lead, but Kent State’s defense held the Bulls to 25 points in the second half.
