ALUMNI REPORT: D-I basketball

Thursday’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I basketball schedule saw three District 2 graduates playing.

Here is a recap of how each did:

RACHAEL ROSE, WOFFORD COLLEGE WOMEN

Thursday’s result

Wofford (21-8) defeated Western Carolina (9-21), 71-56, in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament

Individual statistics

Started, played 38 minutes; 8/15 FG, 3/6 on 3-pointers, 6/6 FT, 25 points; 2 offensive, 2 defensive, 4 total rebounds; 5 assists; 1 turnover; 4 steals.

Notes

Rose scored a game-high 25 points and led four Terriers in double-digits. This was her 16th straight game scoring double figures, tying the program record set earlier this season by teammate Jackie Carman. Rose has scored more than 20 points in each of her last 4 contests. The five assists and four steals were a team-high. … Wofford used a strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Catamounts, 15-10, to claim the win. “After the third quarter, we really came together and were like, ‘If we want to win this game, it’s got to be from the defensive end,”’ Rose said in a recap posted on the university’s athletic website. … Leading by six points after the opening quarter, Rose opened the second quarter by scoring Wofford’s first seven points to extend the lead. …The 21 wins are the second-most in a season in program history for Wofford. The Terriers have won its opening game in the SoCon Tournament for a third straight season.

Wofford, the No. 1 seed, plays UNC Greensboro, the No. 4 seed in Friday’s semifinal. Tipoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Harrah’s Cherokee Center in Asheville, NC. The Terriers and Spartans split the regular season series.

VICTORIA TOOMEY, RIDER UNIVERSITY WOMEN

Rider (8-20 overall, 5-14 MAAC) lost at Manhattan (13-16 overall, 10-10 MAAC), 69-52

Notes

Manhattan outscored Rider, 42-26, over the middle quarters to pull away for the win. … The Broncos struggled offensively, shooting 35.2 percent from the field (19-of-54) and 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three-point range. … With the loss, Rider is locked into the No. 10 seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament. Marist is locked in as the No. 7 seed and will be the Broncos opponent in the first round.

LEO O’BOYLE, LAFAYETTE COLLEGE MEN

6-foot-7 senior forward from Scranton Prep

Lafayette, the No. 6 seed (10-22) defeated host Lehigh, the No. 3 seed (16-14), 53-43, in a Patriot League quarterfinal game.

Notes

Lafayette raced out to a 41-18 halftime lead and held of a second-half rally by Lehigh to advance to the semifinals of the Patriot League Tournament. The Mountain Hawks won both meetings in The Rivalry during the regular season. … Lafayette’s defense held Lehigh to 16.7 percent (5-for-30) shooting in the first half, including 0-for-6 from behind the arc.  … O’Boyle was one of three Lafayette starters to score in double figures. The Leopards were led by freshman Josh Rivera’s 25 points. … O’Boyle has tallied 995 points in his quest to become the 48th Leopard to score 1,000 career points at Lafayette. … Lafayette advances to the semifinals against American. The teams split the season series, each winning on the opponent’s home court.
