Maddy Gilhool proved to be not just the most frequent scorer for the University of North Carolina-Greensboro women’s soccer team, but also the player to be counted on for the team’s biggest goals.
The senior forward from Montrose made the Southern Conference all-tournament team after her overtime goal allowed UNC-Greensboro to upset top-seeded Chattanooga, 2-1, in the semifinals.
UNC-Greensboro lost to Samford, 3-2, in a shootout in the championship game.
Gilhool’s goal against Chattanooga was her fifth game-winner of the season and her ninth total goal of the season.
UNC-Greensboro finished 10-7-4. Gilhool led the team in goals, game-winning goals and points (19).
Gilhool ranks 12th in the nation among National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I players in game-winning goals.
As a freshman in 2019, Gilhool played in 20 games, making 8 starts and scoring 1 goal while assisting on 3. Her sophomore season was played in the spring of 2021 because of COVID and she played in 10 of the team’s 11 games, making 9 starts and scoring twice. As a junior last season, Gilhool started in 9 of her 18 games and finished with 2 goals and 2 assists.
