Frankie Antoniacci joined the 1,000-Point Club, Gerry Rose returned to action and Riverside led by as many as a dozen points in the third quarter Tuesday night.
Before the Vikings could advance to Friday’s semifinals, however, they had to hold off a late comeback by visiting Carbondale for a 49-46 victory in the District 2 Class 3A boys basketball quarterfinals.
Carbondale got within a point late before Riverside scored the last two points.
Matthew Godlewski scored 12 points to lead the way for fourth-seeded Riverside, which will travel to Holy Redeemer Friday night for a rematch of last year’s district championship game that the top-seeded Royals won.
Connor McNally added 10 points for the Vikings.
Antoniacci achieved his milestone on a drive down the right side of the lane with 1:24 left in the third quarter for a 40-30 Riverside lead.
Rose, who started from the first game as a freshman last season, had not played at all this season because of an injury. He not only returned, but started as the playoffs began.
Antoniacci, Rose and Connor Monahan each contributed nine points.
Riverside (14-9) is the sixth-ranked team in the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams. It will take on No. 1 Holy Redeemer (23-2).
Carbondale finished 12-11.
