BASEBALL: Cougars streak to final

Hazleton Area and Williamsport are scheduled to meet for the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional baseball title Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Bloomsburg University.

The Cougars have won 19 straight since losing their non-league opener. Williamsport, the only District 4 team in the field, is 14-6.

MAY 24 QUARTERFINALS

Wilkes-Barre Area 9, Scranton 6

Sawyer Koretz drove in three runs with a double and single and also scored twice as Wilkes-Barre Area won on the road.

The Wolfpack opened a 5-0 lead after 2½ innings.

John Mihalchik retired the last two batters, the final one on a strikeout, with the tying run at the plate after Scranton had struck for three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Mihalchik also had a double.

Ryan Novakowski and Jimmy Kenzakowski also had two hits for Wilkes-Barre Area. Novakowski scored three times. Kenzakowski drove in two and scored one.

Billy Fox went 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI for Scranton. Jacob Burke came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with a double.

MAY 26 SEMIFINALS

Hazleton Area 16, Wilkes-Barre Area 0

Brett Antolick drove in four runs, hit one of defending champion Hazleton Area’s six homers and pitched the last inning of a combined four-inning, no-hitter with Nick Biasi.

Biasi struck out seven and Antolick two.

The Cougars secured the District 2 title with the win and moved within a game of the subregional title and state berth that goes with it.

Jorge Rodriguez homered and drove in three runs. Kyle Peters and John Halcisak had the other home runs.

Hazleton Area scored eight runs in the second for a 9-0 lead, then seven more to end it with two out in the fourth.

Williamsport 2, Delaware Valley 1

All of the scoring took place in the first inning and Deacon Brown’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the inning held up as the game-winner.

Kydreece Burks threw a three-hitter with four strikeouts and a walk for Delaware Valley.

Christian Galimi tossed a five-hitter in defeat, striking out five and walking one.
