District 2 is not likely to release its official basketball tournament brackets until Sunday, but with only one regular-season game remaining in the district, it is possible to use playoff ratings to project all – or, at minimum, the vast majority – of playing seeds and pairings.
Power ratings used in seedings are impacted by the results of teams’ opponents, so there are possibilities of changes in the order of teams, but those chances appear to be minimal.
District 2 playoffs and subregionals involving District 2 teams start as early as Tuesday and continue through the series of championship games March 2 through 4 at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.
Mountain View is at Tunkhannock in a girls game Friday night to complete the regular season. Tunkhannock’s rating could change, but Mountain View is part of the District 2-11 Class A Subregional and District 11 policy is not to include any games after Feb. 17 in the ratings used to determine playoff seedings.
While many of the usual contenders maintained at least that status, the District 2 playoffs could be shaping up to produce some new champions.
Only the Holy Redeemer, in Class 3A, and Holy Cross, in Class 2A, boys are top seeds among the defending champions.
The Dunmore girls are top seeds in Class 3A after winning Class 4A last season.
Weekday games are expected to be single games at 7 p.m. in most cases.
