Berwick joins listing; AH still No. 1

Abington Heights held the top spot in the Riverfront Sports Elite Eight Wrestling Power Rankings of District 2 teams with a repeat title in the Jim Thorpe Christmas Tournament.

Berwick used an eighth-place finish out of 25 teams at the same event to join the rankings for the first time.

The new rankings were released on New Year’s Eve.

The top six teams remained the same with Wyoming Valley West moving up, Berwick joining in and Pittston Area dropping out of the rankings.

Delaware Valley, Lackawanna Trail, Honesdale, Wallenpaupack and West Scranton again hold down second through sixth. All participated in holiday tournaments, with only Lackawanna Trail competing in dual meets, going 4-1 to finish third in the Bob Rohm Duals at Bloomsburg University.

Wyoming Valley West climbed from eighth to seventh after taking 17th out of 32 teams in the highly competitive Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic.

No. 2 Delaware Valley was 10th in the same event while West Scranton was 16th and Honesdale 20th.

Wallenpaupack was fourth at Jim Thorpe.

Berwick is 1-0 in duals with a 51-23 victory over previously ranked Wyoming Area in its only match.
