Berwick maintains top ranking

Berwick suffered its first loss as one of the four District 2 champions that were all eliminated in the first round of the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association girls volleyball state tournament, but the Lady Bulldogs maintained their status as the No. 1 team in the final Electric City Volleyball Academy Elite Eight Power Rankings of district girls teams.

The Lady Bulldogs took over No. 1 when they went on the road and won a battle of unbeatens with former No. 1 Delaware Valley, handing the Lady Warriors their only loss of the regular season. Berwick held on the rest of the way, finishing No. 1 in a season that included Wyoming Valley Conference and District 2-4 Class 3A Subregional championships.

The final rankings were released Monday.

Delaware Valley, the District 2-4 Class 4A Subregional champion, never fell below the second, the spot it held in the final rankings.

Blue Ridge, which joined Berwick as the only teams to win both regular-season and district titles, held on to third. The Lady Raiders won Lackawanna League Division 1 and District 2 Class A.

The rest of the rankings also remained the same.

Dallas, which finished its season a week earlier as the District 2 Class 4A runner-up to Berwick, is fourth.

District 2 Class 2A champion Lake-Lehman is fifth, followed by Holy Redeemer, the team it beat.

North Pocono, the only team to beat Blue Ridge in the regular season, is seventh.

Pittston Area is eighth.
