Berwick volleyball team sweeps

The Berwick boys volleyball team and four Lackawanna League boys tennis teams became the first five teams in District 2 to get out to a 3-0 start this spring.

The Bulldogs have swept each of the three opponents, including Friday’s 25-12, 25-18, 25-11, non-league victory over Notre Dame-Green Pond.

Jayden Charles had 26 service points, 4 aces and 6 digs for the Bulldogs in the win.

Blaze Croop, Jackson Matash and Brock Seely also had strong all-around matches.

Croop had 8 kills, 11 points, 4 aces, 5 digs and 2 blocks. Matash had 28 assists, 4 kills, 7 points and 2 aces. Seely had 10 kills and 7 digs.

BOYS TENNIS

Abington Heights lost just a single game in 10 sets as the defending Lackawanna League champion was among the four teams to reach 3-0 when it defeated Honesdale, 5-0.

Delaware Valley also shut out Montrose, 5-0; Holy Cross defeated North Pocono, 4-1; and Scranton Prep edged Dunmore, 3-2, to also reach 2-0.

BASEBALL

Dave Turlip went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Zach Cwalinski threw four scoreless of relief as Valley View opened with a 5-4, non-league victory over Tunkhannock.

Anthony Ranieli went 4-for-4 with four RBI as Pittston Area banged out 16 hits while winning for the second straight day, beating Wyoming Seminary, 19-9, in six innings.

Dominic Innamorati had three hits and drove in two runs.
