Blue Devils, Cavaliers climb

The last game of the week and one of the late Saturday games helped reshape the Small School boys portion of the Riverfront Sports Super Six Basketball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

When the new rankings were posted late Sunday night, Holy Redeemer was still No. 1 and Old Forge had jumped two spots to No. 2.

Old Forge defeated Valley View, 60-51, in a meeting of ranked and unbeaten teams in Sunday’s only game.

Holy Redeemer, the only new No. 1 since the preseason rankings, held on to its claim to the No. 1 position by beating the former No. 2, Holy Cross, 61-54, in one of the last three games to get started Saturday night.

“I thought we played very well,” Holy Redeemer coach Paul Guido said. “They played well. It was just a great environment for early in the year.”

Holy Cross had been the top-ranked team to begin the season.

The other three preseason No. 1s continue to hold down first.

The Abington Heights boys and Scranton Prep girls remained unbeaten as the top-ranked Big School teams.

Dunmore suffered its first loss, but remained in the No. 1 Small School girls position.

The Scranton Prep boys matched Old Forge for the week’s biggest climb, jumping two spots.
