Blue Ridge, DV lead initial rankings

Blue Ridge used Tuesday’s win over Abington Heights in a meeting of the two defending district champions to land the No. 1 position in the first Riverfront Sports Super Six Boys Volleyball Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Abington Heights did not lose a match until the state tournament a year ago when it won Lackawanna League and District 2 Class 3A championships.

Blue Ridge, the only District 2 team to win a state tournament match in 2022, ended last season in the second spot in the rankings behind the Comets.

Delaware Valley, which has opened with a pair of three-set sweeps in the Wyoming Valley Conference, is the No. 2 team in the initial rankings of this season.

Abington Heights is third, followed by Holy Redeemer, Tunkhannock and Berwick.

All six teams were in the final rankings of 2022, but in a different position.

Blue Ridge, which swept a pair of three-set matches to begin this season before beating Abington Heights in five sets, took third place in the District 1-2-11 Class 2A Subregional last season.

Delaware Valley jumps up from sixth at the end of last season when it finished 9-5.

Abington Heights had swept its first two opponents before facing Blue Ridge.

Holy Redeemer won its only match of this season.

Tunkhannock, which led District 2 with 16 wins last season, is 2-1 with its loss coming to Delaware Valley.

Berwick won its first four before falling to Tunkhannock, putting the Bulldogs in the sixth spot.
