BOYS ROUNDUP: Giardina leads Pittston Area comeback on road

Silvio Giardina led the way as Pittston Area came racing back on the road to pull out a 49-48, non-league boys basketball victory over West Scranton Saturday.

Giardina scored 10 points in an 18-2 run to open the fourth quarter.

West Scranton led 32-17 at halftime and expanded that lead to 22 before taking a 44-31 advantage into the fourth quarter.

The Patriots still trailed by 8 with 3:39 left before scoring 11 straight. They moved in front with a little over a minute left and took a three-point lead with 51.8 seconds remaining.

West Scranton scored the game’s last two points and had the ball with 8.3 seconds remaining and a chance to go for the winner.

Pittston Area came up with a defensive stop to preserve the win.

Giardina finished with a game-high 21 points.

Anthony Cencetti and Jack Long also contributed to the fourth-quarter rally to finish with 14 and 12 points.

Chris Ogden led West Scranton with 16 points. Tristan Lee added 12.

In other non-league boys basketball Saturday:

Lakeland 54, Wyoming Area 44

Joey Dunstone hit three 3-pointers while scoring 13 points to get Lakeland out to a 17-7 lead after one quarter on the road.

Dunstone added a fourth 3-pointer and finished with 22 points.

Wyoming Area closed the deficit to 34-30 going into the fourth quarter.

Antonio Hazelton went 6-for-7 from the line while scoring 10 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter.

Wyoming Area’s Dane Schutter had 11 of his 18 points and hit three of his four 3-pointers during the middle quarters to lead the comeback attempt.

Tunkhannock 83, Mountain View 60

Visiting Tunkhannock put up a season-high scoring total for the second straight game.

The Tigers had scored 78 against Elk Lake in their previous outing.

Ben Chilson led the way with 26 points. Shane Macko added 20.

Nanticoke 60, Berwick 47

Gavin Turak scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures as Nanticoke won at Berwick.

Jaidyn Johnson (14), Caleb Butczynski (11) and Liam Mullery (10) were Nanticoke’s other double-figures scorers.

Sean Murphy led Berwick with 18 points and Billy Hanson added 13.

Murphy got to the line in every quarter and finished 7-for-9 on free throws.

Dunmore 57, Mount Carmel 51

Nate Aviles scored 11 points to lead Dunmore to the win at Mount Carmel.

Thomas Bowen and Cullen Smith each added 10 points to the balanced attack.

Nico Ruggiero had eight points in the first quarter to help Dunmore to a 20-16 lead.

Aviles beat the halftime buzzer with a 3-pointer to give the Bucks a 29-28 lead at the break.

Dallas 73, Athens 50

Unbeaten Dallas opened a 36-20 halftime lead on visiting Athens on the way to the biggest victory margin of its four wins.

Southern Columbia 54, Wyoming Seminary 40

Brian Britton scored 26 points to lead Southern Columbia past visiting Wyoming Seminary.

The Blue Knights hit four 3-pointers to lead 16-15 after one quarter, but did not have any more the rest of the game.

Jack Leahy scored 14 points and Isaiah Stull added 10 for Wyoming Seminary.

Whitehall 69, Hazleton Area 66

Whitehall outscored host Hazleton Area, 13-10, in overtime to pull out the win.

Jim Thorpe 54, Western Wayne 31

Western Wayne lost at home.
