Michael Maldonado and Robert Saunders each had a goal and an assist Tuesday night as Abington Heights rallied past Wallenpaupack for a 3-1 victory that clinched the Lackawanna League Division 1 boys soccer title for the Comets.
Abington Heights, the No. 1 Big School in the Riverfront United Super Six Soccer Power Rankings of District 2 teams, improved to 13-0 in the division and 15-1 overall with one game remaining.
The Comets eliminated North Pocono, despite the Trojans defeating Delaware Valley, 4-3, to improve to 11-2 and 13-5.
Tyler Yakaboski scored in the ninth minute to give Wallenpaupack the lead at Abington Heights.
Kohen Stiles tied the game 43 seconds into the second half on an assist from Maldonado.
The game was tied with 10 minutes left before Maldonado scored off a Saunders assist.
Saunders connected on a free kick with 3:26 remaining for an insurance goal.
Abington Heights had leads of 16-11 in shots and 4-2 in corner kicks.
Niko Williams made eight saves in the win.
Graig Arcurie became North Pocono’s all-time leader in boys soccer coaching wins when Peter Sica scored with 5:29 left to complete a comeback.
Sica had assisted Zach Evans on his second goal of the game with 8:36 left to force a 3-3 tie.
Karter Peereboom scored twice for Delaware Valley, including the go-ahead goal with 14:38 remaining.
The win was the 69th for Arcurie, who is in his seventh season. He surpasses Hosiah “Dave” Davis.
Luca DeRome scored two goals and Michael Bufalino hit the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining as Dallas held on to its slim lead in Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 with a 3-2 win over Wilkes-Barre Area.
