BULLETIN: Lugiano third in state

EDITOR’S NOTE: While NEPASportsNation.com compiles more complete reports, here is a quick recap of Tuesday’s second and final round of the PIAA Individual Golf Championships.

Lake-Lehman’s Michael Lugiano finished third in Class 2A boys Tuesday, leading a list of five District 2 golfers to medal during the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Individual Championships at Penn State.

Four of the medalists were in Class 2A boys and three were from Lake-Lehman, which will pursue a state team championship Wednesday.

Lugiano shot 3-under-par, 69 Tuesday and 4-under, 140 total for the 36-hole tournament on the White Course. He was tied for first during the final round and finished two strokes out of first.

Wyoming Seminary’s Nick Werner earned his second straight medal with a 146 to finish fifth.

Brothers Cael and Eli Ropietski were Lake-Lehman’s other medalists, finishing tied for sixth and eighth with 147 and 149.

Scranton Prep’s Gianna Cafarella was the other medalist, finishing tied for ninth in Class 2A girls with a 161.

The top 10 and ties in each division earned state medals.

District 2 had a total of 7 golfers finish 14th or better and 10 finish in the top 10.

Lackawanna Trail’s Gavin June just missed being the fifth medalist in Class 2A boys, coming up one place and one shot short with 152 for an 11th-place tie.

North Pocono’s Gwen Powell led the District 2 girls in Class 3A with a 158 to place 14th.

Kayle Benson from Honesdale was 17th in 164 in Class 3A girls; Miranda Karoscik from Scranton Prep was tied for 17th in Class 2A girls with 173; and Hallie Brown from Tunkhannock was tied for 19th in Class 3A girls with 165.

Lake-Lehman had a fourth entry in Class 2A boys. Charlie Weidner wound up tied for 25th at 158.

The other Class 3A boys were: Kevin Wortmann from Wallenpaupack, tied for 39th with 155; L.V. Pegula from Valley View, tied for 55th with 160; and Owen Blazick from Crestwood, tied for 57th with 161.

Holy Redeemer’s Arden Brunn was 30th in Class 2A girls with 198.

There were 72 players in each boys division and 36 in each girls.
